Girls Golf Program Records Updated
It’s not a complete sweep of the Lowell Girls Golf records for teams from the last few years, but it’s pretty close.
Lowell has an illustrous girls golf history dating back to the late 1980’s under Head Coaches Jack Ogle and then Rick White going into the 1990’s and 2000’s. Lowell broke through with a 60-3 record over the course of three seasons from 1991-1993, sweeping OK White honors and two regional runner-up trophies. Lowell nearly broke through for their first modern (Track and Field, 1929) state championship in any sport, finishing third in the 1992 state finals led by Erin Nausieda, Connie Colburn, Tracy Burrows, and Megan Leach.
The last four seasons Lowell has been to the state finals all four years, including a breakthrough regional championship in 2022.
New records confirmed by the program and going up on the LHS record board are:
Low 18 Hole Individual Score
Elle Sluss - 75 (+3) at Kenowa Hills Invitational (Gracewil) in 2023.
Elyse Veldman - 75 (+3) at Kenowa Hills Invitational (Gracewil) in 2025.
Low 18 Hole Team Score
Elle Sluss (75), Leah Krieger (81), Hannah Flickinger (81), Elyse Veldman (83) - 320 (+32) at Kenowa Hills Invitational (Gracewil) in 2023.
Low 9 Hole Individual Score
Elle Sluss - 36 (E) at the EGR Jamboree (Kent Country Club) on 9/20/2022. She matched that in 2024 at Gracewil.
Low 9 Hole Team Score
Elle Sluss (36), Elyse Veldman 38, Leah Krieger 40, Kaila Richards 40 - 154 (+10) - at Sparta Jamboree (Gracewil) in 2023.
Gracewil is generally speaking considered Kenowa Hills’ home course and is one of the shorter and easier courses on the schedule along with Yankee Springs, home of Thornapple-Kellogg.
A number of golfers from that group have gone on to play collegiate golf including Leah Krieger (Hope) and Elle Sluss (Kalamazoo College).
While dual matches have largely been phased out of high school golf in favor of jamborees with multiple teams, Lowell holds a 221-161-1 record overall across their history. All 10 top rounds in Lowell Girls Golf history has come in the last three seasons for 18 holes, while for nine holes the top seven nine hole rounds have been in the last three years.
Mandy Gunberg’s 38 at Thousand Oaks and Stefanie Stuewe’s 79 at Gracewil in 2005 and 2006 respectively were older rounds up near the top of the career rounds leaderboard.
