It’s spooky season for the second straight fall at LHS! After a campers in the dark style story of “The Bottom of the Lake” last year, the theatre department is moving to the very posh (spoiler alert: very haunted) Doves Forge Academy. Lowell High School will present Ghostlight in three performances at the Lowell Performing Arts Center beginning Thursday, Oct. 29.
The fall play is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, followed by a 2 p.m. performance Sunday, Nov. 1. No Saturday performance is listed due to the Halloween holiday.
The story follows a student (Adelaide Plank) at Doves Forge Academy who hears unexplained sounds connected to an earlier tragedy in the school’s theater. Joining a troubled production draws the student into the mystery. The staging incorporates live sound effects from their SFX crew (Evangeline Trujillo and Ellory Duimstra) and a bit of audience participation. The play is suitable for all audiences despite its spooky nature, and is certainly family friendly.
Director Amanita Fahrni said the production brings together 18 cast members and 12 crew members. Returning veterans Adelaide Plank and Aundrea Anderson star in the show alongside plenty of newcomers like Delaney Powell and Charlotte Spaulding in the ensemble. Molly Inman, Percy Wale, Neriah Peters, and Elliot Peel all serve in prominent roles over the course of the production.
Behind the scenes, Evelyn Uzarski operates the light board, Aled Foltz runs the sound board and Bryce Berry sets up microphones, supported by the rest of the crew.
Olivia VanGroningen, whose previous stage appearances include Chicago and The Bottom of the Lake, moved into stage management this year before being promoted to assistant director, Fahrni said.
“She shines on stage and back stage!” Fahrni told Red Arrow Preps.
Rather than elaborate scenery, Ghostlight relies on a spare set of two chairs, three rehearsal blocks and a desk. Lighting establishes the other settings, according to Fahrni, with thunder and lightning effects adding to the production’s atmosphere.
Fahrni directs the show, with performing arts director Jules Crawford overseeing lighting design and LHS choir director Nathan Masterson handling sound design.
During Monday’s rehearsal, the cast and crew were fine tuning things as Thursday’s opening night quickly is approaching. The cast was in full wardrobe and makeup as they ran through the show, which runs approximately 90 minutes. Fahrni quipped in a few times to help with some last minute adjustments, but for the most part, the play felt extremely polished. It’s shaping up to be yet another wonderful performance.
All three performances take place at the Lowell Performing Arts Center inside Lowell High School. The center is near the school’s west entrance.
General-admission tickets are $12, or $13.35 with online fees. Tickets and show information are available at lhstix.ludus.com.
