Lowell Four-Year Varsity Player JD Huyser Commits to Northwood

Lowell Senior JD Huyser Commits to Northwood University for Lacrosse

There’s nothing like a father-son sports bond. We’ve seen it many times at LHS. Lacrosse is a relatively new program though, so seeing it with boys lacrosse is fun. Lowell High School senior JD Huyser’s dad Greg was one of the first players for the Red Arrows under head coach Eric Bredin who helped start the program. Now Bredin of course is back, and has helped guide Greg’s son JD to the collegiate ranks.

JD has announced his commitment to continue his lacrosse career at Northwood University, bringing a lifelong connection to the sport and a deep sense of pride in the Red Arrows program to the next level.

Huyser has attended Lowell schools for his entire academic career, something he says made representing the lacrosse program especially meaningful. Lacrosse has been a major part of his life since third grade, when he was first introduced to the sport by his dad.

That early introduction quickly grew into more than just a game.

“My dad sparked my interest in lacrosse and helped me get training from a young age,” Huyser said. “It became something we bonded over, and having him involved in the sport meant a lot to me.”

Throughout his time at Lowell, lacrosse taught Huyser lessons that extended beyond the field. He credits the sport with helping him develop discipline, perseverance, and a strong understanding of teamwork, all of which helped shape him as both an athlete and a person.

From the start under then head coach Austin Buckius, JD has been highly spoken of in the Lowell Lacrosse room. He came in as a talented freshman with extensive club experience and found immediate playing time with the program at midfield, despite a loaded roster that went on to the state semifinals.

The recruiting process introduced new opportunities and challenges. Huyser communicated with several college coaches and visited multiple campuses, learning firsthand what college lacrosse demands both on the field and in the classroom. While the process was exciting, it was also overwhelming at times as he worked to find the best overall fit.

That search ultimately led him to Northwood University where LHS all-time leading goal scorer Andrew Rogers currently plays.

Huyser said his decision came down to the coaching staff, the culture of the program, and the balance Northwood offered between academics and athletics.

“From the beginning, the coaches made it clear that they cared about me not just as a player, but as a person,” he said. “I felt a strong connection to the team and the values of the program.”

With one season to go, one high school memory stands out above the rest. As a freshman, he was part of the Lowell team that defeated East Grand Rapids in the Regional Championship, a game few expected Lowell to win.

“The nerves were unreal,” Huyser said. “East had such a strong reputation, and when we won, it was one of the best feelings in the world.” Huyser and Lowell Lacrosse are back in action in just over a month!
