Lowell High School’s Concert, Symphony and Chamber orchestras presented their fall concert Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Lowell Performing Arts Center under the direction of Wendy Tenney.

It was a part of a busy night at the high school that saw subvarsity football games down at the field as well as volleyball's program night down in the gym, so the halls of LHS were certainly buzzing.

The evening’s program spanned classical works, contemporary compositions and a familiar rock selection, with several pieces drawing on ghost stories and other themes suited to October. Attendees enjoyed new cushioned chairs installed at the LPAC over the summer.

The Concert Orchestra’s selections included David Shaffer’s “Impravada,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Divertimento No. 2” and Kirt Mosier’s “Two Scenes from the Hollow.” The latter’s two movements, “Ichabod’s Walk” and “Hessian’s Ride,” were accompanied in the printed program by passages describing Ichabod’s fears and the headless horseman.

An arrangement of “Smoke on the Water” by Larry Moore added a rock selection to the ensemble’s program.

The Symphony Orchestra’s portion featured Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango” and “Creepy Classics,” arranged by Roy Phillippe. The medley brought together Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre,” Charles Gounod’s “Funeral March of a Marionette” and Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

The ensemble’s program also included an arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Sleepers Wake” and “Allegro con brio,” the opening movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Its roster combined string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians.

The Chamber Orchestra’s selections included “Themes from Tone Poems” by Richard Strauss, featuring themes from “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” “Don Juan,” “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks” and “Death and Transfiguration.”

The seasonal theme continued with Franz Schubert’s “Erlkönig,” arranged by Lee Jinjun, and Joshua Reznicow’s “Ghosts of Bohemia.” The printed program included an English-language excerpt from the Goethe poem behind Schubert’s work. An arrangement of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, “London,” rounded out the ensemble’s listed selections.

More orchestra performances are ahead at the LPAC, with middle-school concerts scheduled for Oct. 13 and 14.

The concert program also lists December performances pairing the high-school Concert Orchestra with sixth- and seventh-grade musicians on Dec. 2, followed by the Chamber Orchestra with sixth- and eighth-grade musicians on Dec. 3. The high-school band and Symphony Orchestra are scheduled for Dec. 9. All three December concerts are listed for 7 p.m.
