Hannah Ake Commits to Aquinas College Women’s Soccer

It’s another Red Arrow set to play for Aquinas. Lowell’s been churning out Aquinas commits lately including Marek Pullen (Track) and Olivia Blood (Soccer). Next year, another Red Arrow will join up. Lowell High School Class of 2027 senior Hannah Ake has committed to continue her soccer career at Aquinas College.

Ake, a member of the Lowell girls soccer program and soon to be four-year varsity player through her freshman year, was first drawn to the sport by watching her older sister, Emily, play. Emily has been a key contributor the last three years for the Cornerstone program just down the road.

“I originally was inspired to play soccer by watching Emily,” Ake said. “I started travel soccer at a young age and instantly knew it was the sport for me.”

Her path to college soccer began well before high school. The midfielder who also will play forward for the Red Arrows, started attending identification camps and showcases near the end of her eighth-grade year, beginning a recruiting process that required years of travel, communication and preparation.

“The recruiting process was lengthy, but it helped me figure out what I truly wanted in a school,” Ake said. “I emailed countless coaches and spent hours editing my highlight reels.”

For much of the process, Ake expected her college decision would take her away from Michigan. She attended camps in several states, including South Carolina and Tennessee, while exploring opportunities outside the region.

“For a long time, I thought I was set on going out of state,” Ake said. “I traveled to places like South Carolina and Tennessee for ID camps, but ultimately realized I wanted my support system close by for the final four years of my soccer career.”

That realization helped lead Ake to Aquinas College, where she believes she will have an opportunity to develop both academically and athletically.

“I chose Aquinas because I felt it was the best place for me to grow as both an athlete and a student,” Ake said. “I trust that at Aquinas I’ll be able to compete at a high level while enjoying college.”

Before beginning her college career, Ake will return for her senior season with the Red Arrows.

One of the defining moments of her Lowell career came during an upset victory over Forest Hills Eastern. Ake scored the opening goal of the game from approximately 25 yards out, helping give Lowell early momentum in a contest the Red Arrows eventually won in overtime.

“One of my favorite high school memories was scoring the opening goal in our upset win over Forest Hills Eastern,” Ake said. “The shot was from about 25 yards out and was probably one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.”

Ake said scoring first helped Lowell gain confidence against a Forest Hills Eastern team that entered the matchup as the expected favorite.

“Since it was the first goal of the game, it felt like it gave our team the momentum we needed,” Ake said. “Pulling off the upset in overtime made the moment even better, especially because no one expected us to come away with the win.”
