Lowell Area Schools Families Will Get Free School Meals Again in 2026-2027

Lowell Area Schools students will once again be able to receive free breakfast and lunch throughout the 2026-2027 school year.

Michigan’s newly approved education budget includes $200 million to continue free school meals for approximately 1.4 million public school students statewide. State officials estimate the program can save families around $1,000 per child each year.

Through the Michigan School Meals program, students in grades Pre-K through 12 can receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day. Families may still choose to pack meals from home.

Participating school districts must make both breakfast and lunch available to all students.

Schools are also required to accommodate medically confirmed food allergies with documentation from a doctor. The state encourages schools to offer additional options for students with dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and halal meals when requested.

The statewide free meal program began in the fall of 2023 and will now continue for at least another school year.
