Musical Media Day Kicks Off “Chicago” at LHS
On Friday, the Lowell Theater program hosted media day at the high school’s Performing Arts Center as the cast and crew stepped in front of the lights and haze with a few props for a fun photoshoot to highlight the show.
The photoshoot gives theater students the same “media day” format that is popular with sports teams, while also creating more sharable promotional content to build excitement for the production. All photos from the media day are free to download and use for students, parents, and the LHS Theater program.
Chicago: Teen Edition is a school-appropriate adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical Chicago, set in the flashy, scandal-driven world of 1920s Chicago. The story centers on Roxie Hart, an ambitious chorus girl who dreams of fame and fortune. When she kills her lover after he threatens to leave her, Roxie manipulates the media to turn herself into a celebrity while awaiting trial.
“The foundation of the show is set. Now we’re diving into the details, polishing the small moments that transform a solid production into a compelling performance,” senior Lily Collins, who plays Roxie Hart, told Red Arrow Preps. It is Collins’ first time performing in theater, and landing a starring role as a senior in her debut production is an impressive accomplishment. Especially given the number of shows the surrounding cast including names like Elyse Veldman, Marley De Jong, Natalie Saylor, and Morgan Saylor who have all had big roles in previous shows.
The show marks a departure from the Disney-styled productions of recent years, including Beauty and the Beast two years ago and the non-Disney, but extremely kid-friendly, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The theater program is excited to take on Chicago, the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and showcase a more mature, jazz-inspired production style.
Showtimes are March 6, 7, 13, and 14 at 7 p.m., and March 8 at 2 p.m.
With bold choreography, sharp satire, and a veteran cast ready for the spotlight, Lowell’s production promises all the “razzle dazzle” audiences expect and then some.
